Discovering Bellagio, Italy: A Jewel on Lake Como

Tucked away on the magical banks of Lake Como is one of Italy's most enchanting and romantic locations, Bellagio. This tiny town, sometimes called the "Pearl of Lake Como," is the ideal fusion of natural beauty, old-world charm, and contemporary elegance. Because of its distinctive location on the peninsula that splits the lake into two arms, Bellagio provides visitors with a wealth of activities, gorgeous vistas, and lush gardens. In Bellagio, one can unwind and experience the magic of northern Italy, whether searching for a quiet retreat, mouthwatering cuisine, or adventure.

Things to Do in Bellagio

Bellagio is a haven for people who enjoy the outdoors, culture, and history. Walk through the town's historic center to begin your experience, with its cobblestone streets and pastel-colored buildings. Explore the town's main attraction beyond shopping and eating, Basilica di San Giacomo, a Romanesque church built in the 11th century.

Bellagio's lavish gardens and lavish villas are one of its primary draws. Villa Melzi Gardens is one expansive property with lovely gardens with exotic plants, statues, and a serene ambiance, perfect for a leisurely stroll along the lakefront.

The historic Villa Serbelloni offers lodging and glorious gardens with guided tours that provide an insight into the lives of the noble families who previously inhabited it, is another must-see.

Take a trek along one of the numerous beautiful trails in the hills surrounding Bellagio if you're seeking a more active experience. You can also explore the lake on a motorboat, private chartered, or self-rental.

If shopping is your preferred activity, Bellagio has you covered. The town is home to numerous small boutiques selling souvenirs, artisan pieces, and high-fashion garments. As Lake Como is well-known for its stunning and quality silks, indulge in purchasing a silk scarf or tie. A few lovely shops include Barindelli e Tressi and Azalea Silk of Como.

Of importance to note, Bellagio is marked by many cobblestone streets and hilly steps. As such, persons with mobility issues may have difficulties traversing the inner streets of the town.

Where to Stay in Bellagio

Bellagio provides a variety of lodging, ranging from high-end five-star hotels to charming bed-and-breakfasts. One of the most distinguished hotels in the area, the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, is the place to stay if you're looking for a luxurious experience. With breathtaking views of Lake Como, an exquisite spa with indoor and outdoor pools, and fine cuisine, this majestic and well-appointed hotel is situated on the waterfront. Its morning breakfast buffet with its vast offering of pastries, cheeses, jams, fruits, and charcuterie served in its grand ballroom is not to be missed! Late afternoon drinks are perfect in its lobby bar where you can find live music and stunning views of Lake Como.

Another great option for those who want a serene and comfortable atmosphere is Hotel Belvedere. A family-run hotel for over a century offering luxurious hotel rooms and small apartments, the Hotel Belvedere combines modern amenities with classic Italian charm. The hotel features a peaceful infinity pool, a soothing spa, a highly-rated restaurant, and panoramic lake views, perfect for a romantic or family retreat.

In 2026, Bellagio will be home to a new Ritz-Carlton Hotel occupying a prime waterfront location with its restoration of the former Hotel Grande Bretagne.

Bellagio also offers smaller boutique hotels and independently-run apartments. Hotel du Lac situated across from the Bellagio Ferry Terminal is a charming three-star hotel offering stunning views of the lake. Il Perlo Panorama, a delightful and reasonably priced hotel set outside the main town and atop a hilltop covered in olive trees and gardens with some of the absolute best panoramic views of the lake, is another fantastic choice. Because of its close vicinity to the renowned Ghisallo Pass, it is a well-liked option for cyclists.

Where to Eat in Bellagio

Whether you're in the mood for modern or classic Italian cuisine, Bellagio offers numerous options for foodies. Due to the number of tourists, it is important to research eateries for their quality and dining availability.  During high season, booking reservations in advance is highly recommended, especially if traveling with a larger group.

For a truly amazing dining experience, try Bilacus Ristorante. Located in the heart of Bellagio along the picturesque Salita Serbelloni (the Serbelloni Steps), Bilacus Ristorante offers a blend of traditional and modern cuisine along with an award-winning wine list. Service is warm and friendly. Bilacus is perfect for couples and groups offering both indoor and outdoor terrace seating.

Situated at the very tip of the Bellagio promontory is another highly recommended dining location, La Punta. This eatery offers a blend of classic Italian and Mediterranean fare. The restaurant’s location is truly unrivaled with outdoor seating and expansive views of the lake and neighboring mountains.

A special treat a bit away from the touristy bustle is Pasticceria Sancassani.  While this bakery is a 30-minute walk from the Bellagio Ferry Station, it is absolutely worth the trek. Not only will you see a different and more rural side of Bellagio on the journey, but at the destination, you’ll find a local, family-run bakery with service and pastries made from the heart. Try their Torta Della Nonna, Torta di Carote, and fruit tarts and a coffee. You won’t be disappointed!

Day Trip and Nearby Attractions

Bellagio is a great starting point to explore the rest of Lake Como due to its strategic location. The towns of Varenna and Menaggio, each with its own beauty and charm, are only a short boat trip away.

Menaggio is a bustling town with small shops, cafes, and a picturesque lakefront promenade. If you spend an afternoon in Menaggio, don’t miss enjoying a heavenly gelato from  La Fabbrica Del Gelato located in the village square.

Varenna is renowned for its scenic waterfront and the stunning Villa Monastero. Varenna is also home to a small train station which offers convenient transit to and from Milan.

Como, the town that lends the lake its name, is also a good option for a day excursion if you'd want to explore farther away. Como is well-known for its storied church, quaint piazzas, and the funicular train that ascends to Brunate, providing breathtaking views of the Alps and the lake. Como is also home to two small train stations that provide convenient transit to and from Milan.

Bellagio is also located close to two additional lakes in northern Italy: Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano. Both offer breathtaking scenery and activities. There are even more opportunities for adventure because these nearby locations are conveniently accessible by vehicle or public transportation.

When traveling to any of these lake towns, be mindful of the bus and ferry timetables and potential transportation issues such as public transit strikes, lake conditions, and vehicular traffic. Please note, if driving into Bellagio, you need a hotel or apartment accommodation inside the limited traffic zone (ZTL) and communicate your car’s license number to your accommodation. If not done, drivers face a 90-euro penalty. Once in the small town itself, drivers should be prepared to face pedestrian traffic on one-way lanes. Due to these driving hassles, we recommend taking a ferry to and from Bellagio when possible.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Bellagio will depend on the kind of experience you want to have. April through October are the busiest travel months due to the sunny and warm weather and the full bloom of the gardens. Bellagio overflows with visitors this time of year, and many of the eateries and retail stores that are open seasonally are open, although quite crowded.

While spring and fall bring milder temperatures and fewer crowds, summer offers lengthy days ideal for boating, swimming, and outdoor dining.

Visit during the off-season, which runs from November to March, if you'd rather have a more sedate and tranquil vacation. You'll have the town to yourself and the lake will seem lovely due to the colder winter air, even though certain attractions could be closed.

Bellagio is a true northern Italian paradise, with its picturesque streets, grand villas, and amazing vistas. This charming town has something for everyone, whether you're there for an energetic adventure, a romantic break, or simply to unwind and take in the scenery. Bellagio is a destination for any traveler, offering the ideal balance of luxury and leisure with its top-notch hotels, restaurants, outdoor activities, and cultural events.
